Thanks to our sponsors once again - Richard Bellm and Halton Honda and Chris Barrett from Freedom 55 Financial and finally Clive and Neil Cawse from Geotab. Great job on the shirts guys.
Nate what can I say - everyone loves your commitment to put this event together with your committee of Gary, John, Richard and Dave.
Here are yesterday recaps
10 a.m. start Big Paul and Caesar versus Ted and Steve Kearns. Well this match between Donnelly/Bellm consortium pick versus Peters/Drew consortium pick went to Big Paul and Caesar. Paul's singing clearly the difference as Nate was hear muttering something about something following the match.
10:40 start Dave Peters and Colin Chisholm versus defending champion Richard Bellm and John Graham. This one went 3 with the Morton Consortium's top pick Dave and Colon persevering over the team owned collectively by Bellm and Morton groups.
11:20 start Ivan Hunt and Chris Barrett versus The Pirate and Rick super freak James. Another three gamer that went the way of the gunslinger and one Rick James (consortium Bellm/Donnelly).
12:00 Byron Goodwin (hope he went for shots and karaoke after Gator Ted's) with Doug Walton against Mark McKeown and Jeff Morton. The final quarter final was a spirited match with some picking and grinning on the right hand side of the court. The Morton Consortium team of Doug and Byron persevered 15-14 in 3 and the Cedar group was suddenly out of any more teams.
Semis
First up saw Dave and Colin win two straight over Caesar and big Paul. Paul got lots of advice from guys in the crowd and he really was the crowd favourite all weekend.
Paul Grootendorst Exhausted and 15 pounds lighter |
The second semi had Byron and Doug spank Rick and Norm in the first game. Ivan Hunt, looking to make up for some lost money, bet me that Byron and Doug would beat Dave and Colin in the final. I willingly took the one beer bet (saving Ivan money in the process). Then Rick becomes a mad man on the court and Norm's shooting goes into overdrive resulting in a 3 game match won 15-14 by the Super Freak and Pirate.
In the 3/4 game, Byron and Doug had trouble starting after their two tough 15-14 3 game matches and bad back Caesar and Paul the crooner won game one. Game two went to Byron and Doug and the crowd wondered how Paul could ever finish a 3rd game. Well sure enough he and Caesar finished 3 games - on the winning end of a 15-13 score.
Byron and Doug Good sports and good reasons to smile |
The finals involved the +3 Gaudette/James team (Bellm/Donnelly consortium) against the Peters/Chisholm (Morton consortium). Colin and Peter had a plan to keep Rick in the back court and it worked to their advantage with a comfortable game one win. Game two saw the young Chisholm and Peters come back and win 15-14 to win the 4th Calcutta.
The bracket winner for this year was Chris Barrett - he really knows how good Norm is given that Norm's carried Chris in Division Five T&D all year (sorry Chris I don't really mean that).
Presentations took place after the final match in the cafe. First and fourth place money went to the happy Morton group.
Nate presenting the cash (yes we were a little fuzzy and standing on our heads) |
Many of the celebration pictures did not turn out so I can't think of a better way to celebrate the end of a great time at this year's Calcutta with some of the best images we had on this year's blog.
That's it that's all! |
Morty -- thanks so much for doing the blog. Great work. It definitely added to the positive vibe of the tourney! Big Paul G
